It happens very fast. It can creep up on you without you really knowing. A couple of missed payments, or one or two refused applications for whatever reason, can tip you over the fine line from good credit to bad credit. It means that you are a risk and lenders wish to protect their revenues. However, lenders aren’t lenders if they keep all the money to themselves! It is still possible to get a credit card even with a poor credit standing.

If you can, wait a few months between applications. Because your credit history is recorded over a certain space of time like five years, if you wait a while, maybe the bad portion of your history may fall off the end of your credit report. Lenders do look more favorably on you if you have not applied for a while.

If you have a bad credit history, then what you are aiming to prove is that you can handle credit and can turn back into a good risk for lenders. This may mean that for now, you are only able to get a card with a ridiculously high interest and a low limit. That’s fine. In order to rehabilitate yourself, the level of interest you pay won’t matter because this is what you will do. All cards have a time limit at the end of the month which is interest free. Read your terms and conditions carefully. Find out what this interest free period is.

Now, make sure you use your card at least once a month. You can set up a regular payment on it, or use it some other way. But this has to be a small amount and you must pay this back in full every month. This is very important. In order to avoid the exorbitant interest rate, the full amount must be paid off. If you need to, then only spend a few dollars on it.

Slowly but surely your credit history will turn from bad to good and you will be eligible for a lot more cards with better rates.
